Description
Pepino (Solanum muricatum) – is a perennial to 50cm fast growing, producing oval shaped fruit to 10cm, pale yellow sweet edible flesh. Its flavour recalls a succulent mixture of honeydew, cantaloupe and cucumber, with hints of orange. It is sometimes called pepino melon or melon pear. Adds flavour to fruit salads. Super juicy and refreshing on a summer’s day.
Shrub grows in a sprawling habit and makes an excellent ground cover plant. It tends to fruit better when grown over a trellis. The foliage is susceptible to damage by light to moderate frosts, however will quickly recover with warmer weather. Grow as annual in frosty areas. The small flowers are blue, violet-purple or white marked with purple.
Thriving and healthy plants grown from cutting 10-15cm tall. Mother plant shown in image gallery.
