
Before you begin, gather these simple supplies. You donโt need expensive equipment.
Materials:
- Compost: Enough to cover your garden area 15cm (6 inches) deep for a new bed.
- Cardboard or Newspaper: Plain brown cardboard (remove tape) or thick newspaper to act as a weed barrier.
- Water source: A hose or watering can.
- Mulch: Wood chips or “bush mulch” for the pathways around your bed.
- Organic Fertiliser (Optional): Blood & Bone or pelletised chicken manure for an initial nutrient boost.
Tools:
- A Long Stick or Broom Handle: Used as a “dibber” for planting seedlings without bending over.
- Steel Rake: For spreading compost level.
- Dutch Hoe or Wire Hoe: For weeding effortlessly while standing up.
- Garden Scissors/Secateurs: For harvesting and cutting back spent crops.
