Learning Objective: Build Phil Dudman’s favourite weeding tool. Its simple to make, easy to use and cheaper than a couple of bunnings sausages!
Don’t Buy It, Build It
Phil loves his wire hoe because it’s precise, lightweight, and glides through the compost without disturbing the soil structure. You don’t need to spend $50 at the hardware store to get one. Phil made his own using an old broom handle and some spare parts
What You Need
- Handle: An old broom handle (wooden is best).
- Wire: A piece of stiff, high-tensile fencing wire (approx 40-50cm long). Note: It needs to be stiff enough not to bend under drag.
- Clamps: 2 x Metal Hose Clamps (Jubilee clips) large enough to fit around the handle.
- Tools: Pliers (to bend wire) and a Screwdriver.
- Optional: Gaffer tape or electrical tape for a smooth grip.
Step-by-Step Build
- Shape the Head: Use your pliers to bend the wire into a wide “U” or stirrup shape. Bend the last 5cm of each end at a 90-degree angle so they run parallel to the handle.
- Position: Place the two bent ends of the wire against the bottom of the broom handle.
- Clamp It: Slide the two hose clamps over the wire ends and the handle. Space them about 3-4cm apart for stability.
- Tighten: Screw the clamps down as tight as they will go. The wire should be rock solid.
- Tape (Optional): Wrap gaffer tape around the clamps to protect your hands and prevent the metal edges from catching on plants .
How to Use It
This tool is designed for finesse, not force.
- The Motion: Phil finds it works best on the pull stroke. Reach out and gently drag the wire loop back towards you, just millimetres below the surface.
- The Result: It slices weed seedlings off at the roots while leaving your precious compost mulch layer intact.
