Quick Tips for No-Dig Success

Learning Goal: Master the specific “hacks” Phil uses to make his garden foolproof and low-maintenance.

1. The “Water First” Rule (For All Seeds)

Beginners often wash their seeds away by watering heavily after planting. Phil uses a smarter method to lock moisture in:

  • The Furrow: Drag a stick or hoe to make a shallow line (trench) in the compost where you want to plant.
  • The Flood: Fill that trench with water before you drop a single seed. Let it soak into the compost.
  • Sow & Cover: Drop your seeds into the moist earth, then cover lightly with dry compost. This ensures the moisture is trapped right at the seed level without washing them away.

2. Boost Your Compost

Compost is great for soil structure, but sometimes it needs a nutrient kick for hungry plants like pumpkins or brassicas.

  • The “Blood & Bone” Layer: Before spreading your 15cm of compost, sprinkle a dusting of Blood & Bone or pelletised chicken manure directly onto the cardboard weed barrier. As the roots hit the bottom, they’ll find a rich pocket of food.

3. The “Weekly Slice” (Weeding)

Don’t wait for weeds to get big. Phil spends just 10 minutes a week weeding 10 garden beds!

  • The Technique: Use a wire hoe or Dutch hoe. Don’t hack at the ground; gently slide the blade 1-2cm under the surface on the “pull” stroke. This severs weed seedlings before you can even see them, without disturbing your soil structure.

4. Save Your Back Planting

Forget the hand trowel.

  • The Broomstick Dibber: Use a long handle (like an old broomstick) to poke holes in your compost for seedlings. You can do this while standing up. Drop the plant in, push the compost back with your foot or hand, and you’re done.

Your Action Plan: Build It This Weekend

Stop overthinking it. You can have a garden ready to plant in under 2 hours.

Step 1: Source Your Compost (Today)

  • Call a local landscape supplier. Ask for “Organic Compost” or “Garden Compost.”
  • Tip: If you have a trailer, bulk buying is much cheaper than bags. You’ll need roughly 0.3 cubic meters for a standard 1m x 2m bed (at 15cm depth).

Step 2: Collect Cardboard (Tomorrow)

  • Raid your recycling bin or ask a local appliance store for big boxes (fridge/TV boxes are gold).
  • Remove all plastic tape and staples. You want plain brown cardboard.

Step 3: Scalp & Lay (Saturday Morning)

  • Mow the patch of grass you’ve chosen on the lowest setting. Leave the clippings there.
  • Lay your cardboard. Overlap edges by at least 20cm so grass can’t sneak through. Soak it with a hose immediately so it sticks to the ground.

Step 4: The “Lasagna” Layer (Saturday Morning)

  • Wheelbarrow your compost on top. Aim for 15cm (6 inches) deep. Rake it flat.

Step 5: Plant Immediately (Saturday Afternoon)

  • You don’t need to wait! The bed is ready. Plant your seedlings using the “Water First” rule to reduce shock, and walk away.
