Jobs for the Garden in April

April is a transition month. Summer crops are winding down. Winter crops are gearing up. Soil is still warm, making it perfect for planting and improving garden beds.

Here’s what to focus on this month…

Cool Temperate

Clear out spent tomatoes and zucchini. Add compost and mulch to protect soil as temperatures drop. Plant brassicas early to avoid heavy frost damage later. Harvest pumpkins and cure them in a dry spot.

Warm Temperate

Remove tired summer crops and replenish beds with organic matter. Direct sow peas and broad beans. Keep watering consistent but reduce frequency. Divide herbs and tidy perennial beds.

Mediterranean

Prepare winter beds early while soil warmth remains. Adjust irrigation as rainfall increases. Harvest the last capsicums and eggplants. Keep weeds under control before winter growth slows.

Arid

Take advantage of milder days to establish cool crops. Mulch heavily to conserve moisture. Protect seedlings from drying winds. Flush pot plants with deep watering to reduce salt build-up.

Savannah

Prune overgrown herbs and improve airflow around plants. Monitor for fungal disease. Begin transitioning to dry-season crops. Compost excess wet-season growth.

Subtropical

Plant brassicas and leafy greens. Continue feeding fruiting crops still producing. Reduce watering slightly as humidity drops. Harvest beans regularly to encourage continued production.

Tropical

Prepare beds for dry-season planting. Improve soil structure with compost. Harvest okra and snake beans often. Trim back vigorous vines and improve airflow.
