March jobs in the garden
March is a transition month.
Summer crops are still producing, but autumn is knocking at the door. It’s the month for harvesting, clearing, refreshing and preparing your soil for the next growing season.
Here’s what to focus on this month.
Cool Temperate
- Harvest tomatoes, beans and zucchini regularly to keep plants productive
- Remove spent summer crops and compost healthy material
- Sow green manure in empty beds to rebuild soil
- Watch for powdery mildew as nights cool
- Top up mulch to retain warmth and moisture
March is your reset month, take the time to tidy up now and autumn will reward you.
Warm Temperate
- Continue watering and feeding fruiting crops
- Start transplanting autumn seedlings
- Prune back excess summer growth
- Net ripening fruit trees
- Monitor for fruit fly and caterpillars
You’re managing two seasons at once, harvest and prepare. It’s one of the busiest but most rewarding times in the garden
Mediterranean
- Maintain deep, infrequent watering
- Harvest pumpkins once skins harden
- Remove finished crops and refresh beds with compost
- Lightly fork soil to improve structure before autumn planting
- Check for spider mites in dry conditions
Your soil prep now sets up your entire cool season.
Arid
- Water deeply in early morning
- Provide temporary shade during heat spikes
- Harvest melons and pumpkins promptly
- Apply thick mulch to protect soil
- Remove struggling plants to conserve water
Efficiency is key, conserve water and focus on what will thrive next.
Savannah
- Harvest sweet potatoes and tropical greens
- Improve drainage after heavy rain
- Prune vines to improve airflow
- Monitor for fungal disease
- Prepare beds for dry season planting
The dry season is your productive window, time to get out in your patch so that you set yourself up to reap the benefits.
Subtropical
- Pick chillies, eggplant and beans regularly
- Remove diseased foliage quickly
- Start sowing autumn crops
- Support late tomatoes
- Refresh mulch after heavy rain
This is one of your most active garden months, it’s like spring time in more temperate climates, so now’s the time to get out there and get busy in the garden
Tropical
- Harvest okra and snake beans frequently
- Cut back tired wet-season crops
- Thin dense growth for airflow
- Check for caterpillars and grasshoppers
- Add compost before dry-season planting
You’re shifting seasons, clear space and reset.
