1. Only buy what you need – plan ahead – make a shopping list – be realistic about how much you need – don’t purchase more just because foods are on special
2. Eat what you buy – use highly perishable foods first – know what reserves you have on hand – eat your leftovers – when dining out take leftovers home
3. Keep food fresh – correctly store foods to keep them fresh
4. Don’t discard – understand food expiration dates – use food preserving techniques such to extend the shelf life of fresh produce. Think pickling, canning, drying or freezing
5. Don’t be trashy ! – share extra food before it spoils – compost inedible food for feed a chicken !
