Choosing the right pot for your patch

Choosing the right pot for your patch

If you have a small space garden, or grow some of your veggies in pots or containers, then it’s
essential that you choose the best container for your plants so they can flourish! Let’s take a
look at a few things to consider when selecting the best pot for your patch

Choosing the right potConsider Size and Depth

First things first, “size matters” when it comes to containers. Here’s why:
Root Development: Larger veggies like tomatoes or carrots require deeper pots for adequate
root growth. A general rule is to choose containers that are at least 30-45cm deep.
Plant Size: For larger vegetables, consider containers at least 45-60cm in diameter. Smaller
veggies like herbs or lettuce are comfortable in pots as small as 15-20cm across.

Material Matters

The material that your pots are made of can have a big impact on soil temperature and moisture
levels:
Clay or Terracotta: These materials are porous, allowing air and water to pass through, which
helps prevent soil disease and root rot. However, they can dry out quickly, so they’re best for
moisture-loving plants.
Plastic and Fiberglass: Lightweight and more cost-effective, these materials retain moisture
better and are a good choice for plants that require a consistently moist environment. However,
they can sometimes lack proper drainage.
Fabric Pots: A lightweight option, fabric pots offer excellent drainage and help prevent over-
watering. They also encourage healthy root pruning, leading to stronger plants.

Drainage Is Key

No matter which type of container you choose, ensure it has adequate drainage holes. Good
drainage is essential to prevent water from pooling at the bottom of the pot, which can lead to
root diseases and over-watered, unhappy plants. If your chosen container doesn’t have holes,
drill a few in the bottom before planting.

Colour and Heat

The colour of your pot can affect soil temperature. Dark-coloured containers absorb more heat,
which might be beneficial in cooler climates but can cause soil to heat up too much in warmer
areas. Light-coloured pots, meanwhile, reflect more sunlight and stay cooler, which is great for
hot climates.

Self-Watering Containers

For busy gardeners, self-watering pots can be a game-changer. These pots have a reservoir at
the bottom that allows the plants to absorb water as needed, which is particularly useful during
hot weather and for thirsty veggies.

Going Vertical

If you’re really tight on space, consider vertically stacking pots or using hanging planters for
small vegetables like herbs, small chillies, or strawberries. Vertical gardening is not only space-
efficient but can also turn your patio or balcony into a lush green space.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right pot isn’t just about fitting your space or matching your home’s style—it’s
about giving your plants a healthy environment in which to thrive. By considering factors like
size, material, and drainage, you’re setting yourself—and your plants—up for success.
